Over 200% FUNDED! Cooking stretch goal REACHED! Next stretch goal REVEALED!
almost 3 years ago – Sat, Jul 03, 2021 at 11:05:17 PM

Wow.

We've hit a huge milestone today... DOUBLING our initial asking goal for the campaign! THANK YOU!

I'm so excited to have this additional support to make the game even better! Now I can talk more about the next stretch goal: Bonus Insects and Fish!

This actually encompasses the entirety of the Fishing and Bug Catching skills, and will help to overhaul the existing plan to include more tools, more rewards and more types of fish and bugs to collect!

Fishing in Cloudscape works a bit differently from other games in the genre. Unlike cooking, there's no real on-screen mini-game at play here. Instead, you will cast your line into the water, with the distance being determined by how long you hold the button before casting. Once the line is in the water, you'll see your bobber in the water and will need to wait for the perfect time to start reeling in! Small movements to the bobber will indicate fish activity, while the bobber going completely under means you have a fish on the hook!

You will then start reeling in by holding down the tool button. The line will start slowly coming toward you in the water. If you see large splashing and feel resistance, you need to briefly stop reeling or else you risk breaking the line and the fish escaping! Once the fish tires out, you will be able to safely reel it all the way to shore, and pull the fish from the water. This method of fishing is meant to feel more like the real thing, and takes away the interface elements like bars and moving arrows to make fishing hopefully a more enjoyable and "in the moment" type of activity.

Along with that, there's a wide variety of fishing rods, bait and tackle to help you with faster biting, easier reeling and catching bigger/rarer fish!

For Bug Catching, it's all about the net! You will equip a net which has a special ability to let you slowly sneak up on insects and other small creatures.  Once you're in the zone, you can swing the net and make a capture! Insects will come in all shapes and sizes, and can be located flying in the air, roaming around on the ground, in trees and bushes, under rocks, on top of water and even underground.

Shout-Out:

About the Game:

Plot of the Druid is about the adventures of a disgraced former druid apprentice who is pulled into a perilous quest to regain his honor and save the world from a terrifying imbalance of nature. The game is a modern point-and-click adventure inspired by classic LucasArts and Sierra games. It’s full of sarcastic British wit, elemental spells and a unique mechanic of shapeshifting for solving puzzles in a creative way. The game can be described as “Simon the Sorcerer meets Rincewind with a Monkey Island vibe!”

We did it! $90,000 STRETCH GOAL REACHED! Next stretch goal REVEALED!
almost 3 years ago – Sat, Jul 03, 2021 at 04:05:43 PM

Woohoo! Ranching Expansion UNLOCKED! More animals for everyone! Can you spot the never before revealed animals in this image?

Thank you everyone for getting us this far!

I'm really excited to talk about the next stretch goal... COOKING! Yeah!

With this stretch goal hit, I will be able to implement some really great cooking minigames and even more food and recipes to unlock! While things such as crafting are very straightforward, I want to make cooking a bit more entertaining and different. I have planned out unique mini-games for each main kitchen tool type: Baking, Frying, Chopping, Boiling

Each mini-game will require different methods to perfect, which will result in different qualities of dishes created! Higher quality dishes will restore more energy and provide better buffs when eaten!

One example of a mini-game would be for Frying foods. Here, you will have a large frying pan on screen and you will need to perform the proper actions to ensure the food cooks properly. Bringing the pan closer or farther from heat, shaking the ingredients back and forth, seasoning, and even flipping everything! There will even be ways to make the mini-games even easier by increasing your cooking skill, so no worries if you're not a Michelin-Star chef!

We are fast approaching $100k which is 200% of our initial goal! I'm really happy to have your support on this journey and it means a lot. Thank you once again everyone!

Farming Expansion Stretch Goal REACHED! Next goal revealed plus Closer Look: Inventory and Storage
almost 3 years ago – Wed, Jun 30, 2021 at 05:58:11 AM

We did it! More than $80,000 pledged! Ranching Expansion is our next target at $90,000! This expansion will help to increase the amount of animals you can raise on your farm, along with added tools and resources! Did you know you can choose any animal to be your pet at any time? As a pet, the animal will follow you around and provide different bonuses! Dogs will sometimes dig up items, cats will catch some insects, horses can be ridden and they have a saddle which can store items!

The newly revealed goal is COOKING! I planned a very simple cooking system for the game but with this expansion we can have really cool mini-games for the various types of cooking! Not only that, but a whole lot more food items!

Below I go into further details regarding the inventory system and storage system in the game!

Inventory and Storage

You start out the game with a simple backpack which can store some items. As you progress you will unlock larger backpacks for more inventory space. However I don't want to make the game revolve around inventory management! You will have many options available for crafting storage containers. These containers come in various shapes and sizes, ranging from crates, barrels, pots, cabinets, and chests just to name a few.

Accessing different storage containers and quick dropping an item into a pot

Storage is a quick way to keep extra items safe, but to improve this even further, you will also be able to quickly add items to storage by simply placing items directly into the storage object without opening up any interface! Another extremely useful feature is that any crafting or tasks requiring items will pull items from ALL STORAGE LOCATIONS. (aside from storage you've chosen to lock)

This means no longer having to walk halfway across your island to grab some resources from storage to trek all the way back to your crafting table to use them. The system is smart enough to understand that you have those items SOMEWHERE, and will use those resources with no issues. Sometimes you might want to save items and not have them get used in a crafting recipe, however… Which is why you will also have the option to lock some storage objects as mentioned above. Locking storage will prevent those items from being pulled out for crafting but will still count the items toward task completion or other collecting goals.

Adding fuel to a campfire and lighting it

The inventory has a lot of useful tools in it to make inventory management a breeze. First you'll be able to drag and drop items anywhere in your inventory, including your quick toolbar, storage, clothing and even placing an item into your hands. Holding down on an item selection will give you the option to change the quantity you're handling, allowing for quickly splitting stacks of items. Second, there are handy shortcut keys for quick dropping of items and quick moving. The quick move system is a smart system which will attempt to move an item from one location to another depending on the current interface.

For example, if you use the Quick Move key on an inventory item, it will automatically attempt to equip the item to your Quick Toolbar. If you use the Quick Move key on a Toolbar item, it will send the item automatically to your inventory bag. If a Storage object is open, you can quick move items from inventory/toolbar to storage, and vice versa. This even works with clothing accessories. Quick Moving a piece of clothing will attempt to equip that clothing to your character. But if Storage is open, it will Quick Move the clothing to storage instead.

This system is designed in a way to save the player a lot of time and effort when it comes to putting items where they want them.

Museum Stretch Goal SMASHED! Next Goal Revealed! + Closer Look: The World of Cloudscape
almost 3 years ago – Sat, Jun 26, 2021 at 05:53:27 PM

We did it! Only one day later and we hit the first stretch goal!

I continue to be amazed at the support everyone is showing for Cloudscape! I'm thrilled to be announcing the next stretch goal already!

Next up is the Farming Expansion! I would love to add even more crops to the game, along with more tools and upgrades to make farming more interesting and challenging. Since the game isn't tied to a daily schedule system, crops grow in "real time" meaning you can plant and harvest crops at 4am if you want, and it also means that tending to them can be a bit trickier! I would like to add tools such as a magnifying glass which when used, will give you a detailed breakdown of any crop, including the soil quality, any enhancements applied to it and if it needs watered.

You will be able to see this at a glance simply by standing near a crop with the tool equipped.  Crops will also adhere more to their real world counterparts. For example, you can grow a Tomato in the Summer or even the Spring. In Spring, the Tomato will grow slower as the soil isn't quite as warm. Many crops like this can be grown across multiple seasons!

------

This is the first in a series of updates where I will go into more detail about various features in the game! Please feel free to leave comments and ask questions!

The World of Cloudscape

The game consists of many various islands to discover and explore. Some of these islands are almost entirely hand crafted, with some procedural/random elements tossed in on top as seasoning. Other islands are more procedural generated and completely unique to each playthrough of the game. Each island can have its own biome, from tropical to desert to cold and snowy. Islands will also have their own unique fruits, forage goodies and creatures to discover, along with possibly hidden treasures, caverns and dungeons!

Weather and seasons also persist throughout each island, with the biome type dictating the kind of weather an island will receive. Weather has an impact on many plants, animals and more. Things continue to grow and change even when you aren't on an island! You could leave an island when it has sparse trees and vegetation, only to return a year later to find things have overgrown and there's now a lush forest!

My goal is to make each island worth visiting and exploring, which means I'm going to do my best to make sure there's always something new to discover on a new island, and they won't simply be empty and badly generated but instead will contain a wealth of interesting things.

As for your own island, you'll eventually have the power to change the land itself! You can raise and lower terrain to create rivers, divots or cliffs. You can decorate your island however you'd like, and grow any number of crops. You can even bring vegetation from other islands to grow on your own island, creating a rich ecosystem of diverse plants and animals.

You'll be able to change every detail, down to the flower and grass detailing and pebbles on the ground. Get creative! I want to provide you the tools to make your island really your own.

Traveling the world is another story entirely. At first you won't have any access to travel quickly or travel to other islands. But in time and with some ingenuity, you will find ways to travel faster and farther than ever before. Unlocking new modes of transportation will let you reach entirely new areas of the game!

Have any questions regarding the world, procedural generation or the islands in general? Feel free to comment below and let me know!
